The Japanese Naval Ship “JS Kongo” that last morning took part in the exercise had just last month completed a tracking exercise to tests the ships ability for tracking and targeting in preparation for last mornings successful missile defense test.
Last mornings test also marks the first time an allied nation has taken an active part in a live fire test of sea based missile defense using their Aegis missile defense ships.
The target missile was launched from the Barking Sands, Pacific Missile Test Range Facility in Kauai, Hawaii.
The Crew of the JS Kongo tracked the ballistic missile and developed a fire control solution and at 12:08 PM (HST) , 7:08 am Tokyo time, the Kongo’s crew fired a single SM-3 “Standard Missile-3” Three minutes later the SM-3 engaged and intercepted the incoming ballistic missile destroying it 100 miles above the Pacific Ocean.
