The Missile Defense Agency today’s test of the ground-based interceptor at Vandenberg Air Force Base today was as the agency stated in their press release a “No Test”
The target IBCM missile that the Ground based interceptor would have engaged failed to reach the required altitude and experienced a technical error causing it to not reach the defense area that the long-range ground based interceptor was defending.
The failure of the target missile is not a fault of the ground based interceptor program and is a risk that is taken in using older missiles from the testing fleet of missiles for testing.
The Missile Defense Agency plans to bring forward another test missile that was planned to be used in a test late next year, and use it in another test later this summer. The MDA will also be conducting an investigation into why the target missile motors failed on the test threat missile.
