The Iranian government announced today that it will be conducting a naval exercise in the Gulf and Sea of Oman, the exercise follows upon maneuvers the United States and allies completed recently that simulated tracking a vessel suspected of carrying illegal weapon shipments.

An Iranian official announced that the naval exercise would be started with the test launch of a Shahab-3 missile. The Shahab-3 has a range that can hit Israel and other parts of the Middle East and is capable of being equipped with a nuclear warhead.

In an attempt to reassure surrounding Middle Eastern states, General Yahya Rahim Safavi head of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards stated, “Our neighbors are our friends. The guards just want to prove that they are ready to resist in any threatening situation.”

Safavi also stated that the code name for the planned naval test that will take place on Thursday is “Great Prophet 2” For this naval exercise Safavi stated the Shahab-3 missile would be equipped with cluster warheads.

If Iran does conduct a test of the Shahab-3 missile, it is more then likely they will conduct tests of other of their missile systems in development.
