A live fire test using the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system was conducted today at White sands missile range, this is the third developmental flight test conducted of the THAAD system since testing resumed in November 2005.
The test took place at 5:20 a.m. MDT ( 7:20 a.m. EDT) and tested all parts of the THAAD System including, Launcher, Radar, Fire Control and Communications. The primary goal of the test was to test the THAADS seeker characterization of a ballistic missile and target in the high-endoatmosphere (just inside the earth’s atmosphere). A non-separating target dummy missile was launched for the test and was successfully intercepted by the THAAD System. Two more test are planned of the THAAD system for testing at White Sands Missile range before the testing of THAAD is moved out to the Pacific Missile Range Facility in Hawaii.
