Raytheon Awarded $752 Million U.S. Air Force Contract for Taiwan Early Warning Radar

TEWKSBURY, Mass., June 23, 2005 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — Raytheon Company (NYSE: RTN) has been awarded a not-to-exceed $752 million contract by the U.S. Air Force, Air Force Material Command, Electronic Systems Center (ESC), Hanscom Air Force Base, Mass., to provide Taiwan with an Early Warning Surveillance Radar System. This system will enable the Taiwan Air Force to detect and track long- and short-range ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, air breathing targets and surface ships with “no doubt” reliability.

“Raytheon Co., Bedford, Mass., was awarded on June 21, 2005, a $79,544,455 modification to a cost-plus-incentive-fee contract for Joint Land Attack Cruise Missile Defense Elevated Netted Sensor Systems with Surveillance Radar. Work will be performed in Bedford, Mass., and is expected to be completed by July 31, 2010. Contract funds will not expire at the end of the current fiscal year. This was a sole source contract initiated on Dec. 29, 2004. The Defense Space and Missile Command, Huntsville, Ala., is the contracting activity.”

Japan faces 58 bil. yen tab for interceptor

The United States has asked Japan to contribute 58 billion yen toward a joint missile defense development project expected to begin in fiscal 2006, The Yomiuri Shimbun learned Sunday. The U.S. government estimates it will spend a total of 545 million dollars (about 58.3 billion yen) on the project by fiscal 2011 and it has requested Japan make an equal contribution. Japan contributed 26.2 billion yen to joint Japan-U.S. technical research on the missile defense system between 1999 and 2005.

Russia Scraps BZHRK nuclear trains

While the official reason given for scrapping the system was “the expiration of the guaranteed life cycle,” the BZHRK system’s capabilities exceeded the newer Topol and Bulava missile systems.”

China test-fires new submarine-launched missile

TOKYO - (KRT) - China test-fired a new long-range, submarine-launched ballistic missile Thursday, Japanese government sources said Friday. The new missile is believed to be the Ju Lang-2, a modified version of the intercontinental ballistic missile Dong Feng-31 that has a range of about 8,000 kilometers.

Japan passes bill to better enhance preparedness for missile defense

The House of Representatives on Tuesday passed a bill to revise the Self-Defense Forces Law that sets forth the procedure to intercept with a missile defense system a ballistic missile launched toward Japan.

The bill’s passage through the lower house marks a step forward in improving readiness for protecting Japan’s safety. The bill should be passed into law as soon as possible.

Under the missile defense system, Japan will intercept an incoming missile by deploying the Standard Missile 3 interceptor to be mounted on Aegis vessels and the ground-based Patriot Advanced Capability 3 interceptor.

US willing to talk to India on missile defence systems

New Delhi, June. 16 (PTI): The US today said it was willing to talk to India on supplying missile defence systems while hoping that it would spell out the regulatory mechanisms for export control of sensitive technologies.
“We are willing to talk to India about missile defence. Missile defence is very expensive. So, it is not something that India will enter into lightly,” visiting US Assistant Secretary of State for Arms Control, Stephen Rademaker, told reporters here.

Japan To Move Missile Defense Into Development

“SINGAPORE (Kyodo) Japan will move its sea-based missile defense research project to the development stage in the next fiscal year, Defense Agency chief Yoshinori Ono said Sunday.
“The time has come to move to the development phase,” Ono, who was in Singapore for the Asia Security Conference, told reporters. “I would like to have arrangements made within the government swiftly and submit the budget request for fiscal 2006.”
The project is being undertaken jointly with the U.S.
The cost for the first fiscal year, which begins next April 1, is expected to amount to several billion yen, he said.
Ono confirmed reports that Japan and the U.S. will jointly carry out the first missile interception test for the sea-based Standard Missile 3 interceptor next March in Hawaii.”

Taiwan Test-Fires Cruise Missile

“TAIPEI, Taiwan — Taiwan successfully test-fired a locally developed cruise missile capable of striking southeastern areas of Mainland China, a newspaper reported Sunday.
The missile _ fired from the Jiupeng Missile Base in southern Taiwan _ cruised about 300 miles before hitting a dummy target at sea off outlying Green Island, the China Times quoted an unidentified military source as saying.
The report did not specify the date the test was conducted.
Taiwan’s Defense Ministry declined comment.”

Syria Tested Scud Missiles, Officials Allege

Syria test-fired three Scud missiles last week, including one that broke up over Turkey, senior Israeli security officials said.

The officials said the missiles, using North Korean technology and designed to carry chemical warheads, were fired May 27.
In New York, Israeli Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom said the Syrian tests were “very dangerous.” There was no comment from Damascus.

The New York Times first reported Israel’s allegations in Friday editions. It quoted the Turkish ambassador in Washington, Osman Faruk Logoglu, as saying that “during a military exercise, there was a technical mishap.”
